A custom illuminated sign looks simple once it's on the wall — but getting there involves several distinct stages, all done in-house at our Balcatta workshop rather than farmed out to third parties. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at a real job, a distressed timber-look backlit sign built for Lone Star Rib House.
Once artwork is approved, letters and logo shapes are cut and routed to create clean recesses for the lighting. LED strip is then hand-fitted into these channels and soldered together, with every join tested before the piece is closed up — a hidden step, but the one that determines whether the finished sign glows evenly or has dark patches years down the track.
From there, the cut letters are assembled onto their backing panel, wired back to a driver, and powered up for testing before installation. It's this attention to the unglamorous middle steps — routing accuracy, LED spacing, solder joints — that separates a sign that still looks sharp in five years from one that starts dimming within twelve months.
